FAQ – POREspective® Acne Treatment Clinic

In-Clinic Acne Clients

How does the POREspective® system work?

The POREspective® home care regimen with lifestyle and diet changes can resolve 95% of inflamed acne within 3 months (7 months for non-inflamed acne) by:

  1. finding the root cause of your acne, whether internal (leaky gut, hormonal imbalance, candida) or external (comedogenic products, picking)
  2. creating deep healing on the inside with low-inflammation foods and supplements
  3. speeding up healing on the outside with an improved skin care routine and professional products

In the clinic, we constantly adjust your home care routine and push your skin to clear with products that penetrate the pore where acne begins. Treating acne is like walking a tightrope: getting you clear as quickly as possible without causing you to get dry and uncomfortable. We never want to push your skin beyond what it can tolerate.

With regular Acne Treatments, we can get you clear faster than you can on your own by:

  1. extracting existing acne lesions as they surface
  2. applying our unique acne and pigmentation peel to increase cell turnover and lighten pigmentation
  3. strengthening your home care regimen before it has a chance to adapt (and stop working)

If you wish to work with our clinic, you will first need to schedule an Acne Consultation in order to become a client. Next, we recommend Acne Treatments every 2-6 weeks, or until your acne is completely gone; however, you can expect to see an improvement in your acne in the first 2-4 weeks on the program. Continuing on the last home care regimen and diet that got you clear and coming in for maintenance treatments every 12 weeks will prevent new acne lesions from forming and will keep you clear.

What if I’m on other prescription products?

We require you to stop vitamin A derivatives like Tazorac, Retin-A, and Differin until you are clear because we find they make your acne even more inflamed.

If you are on an oral antibiotic, Spironolactone, or a birth control approved for acne, we recommend staying on the prescription for a minimum of 2 months after you start working with us so you don’t experience “rebound acne” from getting off of the medication.

If you are on a prescription benzoyl peroxide like Duac or BenzaClin, you may remain on it; however, we will ask you to use our Hydrating Gel to make it more tolerable for all over and nightly use.

Can I combine your regimen with another one that I have been on?

Acne is challenging enough to get under control without bringing in outside products that may react with or cause problems with a product you need to be on to get clear. In order to isolate the variables, we require that you only use products from our acne line. The reason is, skin care lines change formulas too often for use to keep track, and we know exactly which ingredients are in our products.

Once your skin has cleared and you are no longer under our care, you are welcome to experiment with outside products. Until then, let’s keep it simple.

How long does it typically take to get clear?

If you follow your home care program with no interruptions or “skipping,” discontinue all pore-clogging skin care products, hair products, and makeup, stay away from inflammatory foods, and come in every month for treatments, you will see improvement in the first 2-4 weeks on the program and mostly-to-completely clear of inflamed acne within 3 months. Non-inflamed acne may take up to 7 months to get clear because it is a deeper, more resistant form of acne.

Am I going to have to use these products forever?

We generally recommend staying on the last home care regimen that got you clear for at least a year before attempting to cut back on your products, and then do it slowly.

Start by decreasing your benzoyl peroxide from Clearing Gel 5.0 to 2.8 and see if your acne flares up. If you’re still clear, try using Clearing Gel 2.8 every other day, and then every 3rd day.

It’s like figuring out how little exercise or how much food you can get away with and still wear the same size pants.

What is the youngest age that you take clients?

In our experience, most teenagers are not mature enough to follow a twice-per-day, topical-only program that depends heavily on following lifestyle and dietary recommendations; therefore, we only see adults age 20 and older.

Who will I be seeing at my appointment?

You will be seeing our founder, Alissa Chasen, who developed the POREspective® Clinic protocols.

Are doctors on staff?

We do not have any physicians on staff. Alissa Chasen is an esthetician licensed by the state of Texas. However, we do refer to and work closely with several Austin-area dermatologists should you need a referral.

How is your methodology different from dermatologists?
  • We have more time to spend with you than a busy dermatologist (appointment times are 45 minutes).
  • We have the most effective medical-grade home care products that don’t require a prescription.
  • We always do extractions in our treatments.
  • We have a compassionate clinician who has suffered from acne herself, so we know what you are going through.
  • We stay in close contact with you throughout the entire process of getting clear.
How can you clear my acne when other dermatologists and skin care providers have not?

Clearing acne is all we do, and we’re very good at it. Some types of acne respond better to antibacterial action, while other acne types respond better to high levels of exfoliation. We successfully treat all types of acne with a combination of regular, professional acne treatments, high-quality, non-comedogenic acne home care products for your specific type of acne, and a low-inflammation diet.

In addition, our comprehensive approach focuses on preventing acne in the first place by finding the root cause rather than the dermatologist approach of merely treating the symptoms with oral antibiotics and Accutane. We are dedicated to providing proactive and personalized treatment plans for our clients.

By uncovering internal factors (leaky gut, hormonal imbalances, candida) and external factors (comedogenic products, skin picking), customizing a diet to create deep healing on the inside, and speeding up healing on the outside with an improved skin care routine and professional products, anybody can achieve clear skin.

What if I am pregnant?

We only work with pregnant women if they were established clients when they became pregnant.

For existing clients who get pregnant: Before we can continue working with you, you will need to get expressed, written permission from your doctor about which ingredients he/she will allow you to use during your pregnancy. We will not be able to sell you products or give you treatments without written permission.

For pregnant acne sufferers who want to become a client: Unfortunately, we cannot work with you until after you’ve delivered your baby and have finished breastfeeding.

Do you treat scarring?

Our unique Acne Peel and Exfoliating Serums work on lightening dark spots and light scarring along with your acne. Resistant, pitted scars can be addressed once you acne has cleared.

What other skin conditions do you treat?

Acne is our focus, but we also treat secondary wrinkles, melasma, pigmentation and scarring.

Medical Extractions

How are medical extractions different from spa extractions?

Alissa Chasen is trained in knowing which lesions are ready for extractions, and which need to be left alone. We will not use products that may exacerbate your acne (like those used in spas that may smell good but actually contain oils or other ingredients that could make you breakout). We also take great care to ensure that our environment is sterile. All of our instruments are meticulously cleansed and sterilized.

What are the benefits of medical extractions?

It’s the fastest way to get clear. We extract the lesions as they migrate to the surface of the skin while the home care prevents new lesions from forming. It takes up to 90 days for acne to come to the surface, so in the three months that we are working together you will continue to have some breakouts; however, they will be greatly reduced in frequency and severity and will heal much more quickly. These are just old lesions that were already in the pore when you came in for your initial appointment that are coming to the surface, and will be gone forever once they are extracted. Acne Treatments with extractions can be done as often as every two weeks.

What can I expect during medical extractions?

During a session of medical extractions, our licensed esthetician will steam your skin for a few minutes to open up your pores, then clean out your clogged pores by removing comedones (whiteheads and blackheads) and decreasing the inflammatory acne lesions. Medical extractions are appropriate for all acne clients and work best when the skin has been prepped with topical acne medications. Medical extractions are always combined with chemical peels in order to achieve the most improvement. You may notice some redness of the treated area after your extractions, but mineral makeup easily covers the redness. Most clients go back to work or social activities immediately following the treatment.

Do medical extractions hurt?

We have a very gentle extraction technique and only extract lesions that have migrated to the surface of the skin and are ready to be extracted. We find this technique leaves no undesired pigmentation and heals quickly. For most clients, there is a slight discomfort but many are surprised by how little it hurts.

Do you recommend scheduling medical extractions on a regular basis?

Yes, but especially if you are prone to picking at or popping your own acne. So another question you might be thinking is, “what makes medical extractions different than using your own two fingers to pop a zit?” something we refer to as “bathroom surgery” and is a big no-no. There answer is: “A lot.” First, popping your own zits is never a good idea. It can lead to further breakouts, red spots and permanent scars. Plus, the chances of you being able to fully remove the lesion without medical tools is pretty slim. A medical extraction session always includes a chemical peel to fully get rid of the bacteria and dead skin cells. Prior to the chemical peel, the esthetician will use a sterile lancet to open up the pore followed by an acne extractor to remove the plug. Our estheticians always use medical-grade gloves and sterile instruments when performing this procedure to make sure no bacteria is spread.

Treatments and Results

What happens during a Consultation?

During your educational Consultation we will review:

  • – Your past medication usage and previous treatments
  • – Your current skin care, hair products, and makeup to see if the root cause of your acne is external (pore-clogging products, skin picking)
  • – Your current diet to see if the root cause of your acne is internal (leaky gut, hormonal imbalance, candida, stress)
  • – Your acne and confirm your Acne Type
  • – The appropriate active acne topical medications to begin with
  • – Individualized home care program to follow and show you exactly how to use the products to speed up the healing on the outside
  • –  Individualized dietary and supplement recommendations to create deep healing on the inside
  • – “Homework” to do over 2-6 weeks prior to your First Followup appointment (if you choose to schedule one)
What happens during an Acne Treatment?

We do extractions followed by a very mild chemical peel to the entire affected area, sometimes layered with a pigmentation treatment or a stronger peel on extractions. Generally speaking, neither of these are uncomfortable nor will it make your skin peel beyond mild flaking.

How long is each appointment?

Once you have completed your Acne Consultation, you will be eligible for clinic appointments, which are 45 Minutes. When you start to get clearer and there are less extractions to do, treatments will take less and less time; however, if your skin needs it we will start doing stronger peels to lighten pigmentation and maintain clarity.

Do I need to get undressed for the treatments?

Our corrective treatments are different than those provided at salons and spas. Our treatments are not designed to be pampering; they are meant to bring significant improvements in your skin. For facial treatments, you will remain fully-dressed during the treatment. For back treatments, you will stay dressed from the waist down and put on a gown that opens in the back.  Both treatments are performed on a sterile bed with disposable headbands and headrests.

Do I have to get in-clinic treatments?

You may not need to. The Acne Consultation, and the work on your part following our home care, homework, and lifestyle and diet recommendations, is often all you need to get clear.

However, If you live close enough to the clinic, you may wish to to come in for a First Followup Appointment and additional Acne Treatments. Regular treatments with extractions, which include an adjustment in your home care regimen and problem solving, is the fastest way to get clear.

We’ve also been able to successfully get many clients clear through Virtual Check-In’s, where we troubleshoot for lifestyle decisions that cause acne and design an individualized home care routine that help clear clients even if they live long-distance.

What do the peels actually do?

Our high-quality corrective peels have multiple purposes: mild exfoliation, softening of comedones, lightening of dark and red spots, and prepping the skin for maximum absorption of your home care products.  Chemical peels for acne should never cause aggressive peeling, because that would prevent you from doing your home care program.

When should I book my treatment if I have a special event coming up?

Most people get red from extractions – there’s no way around it. So, you really need to plan ahead and make sure you do not have a special event within 24 hours of getting a treatment. For women: we can recommend a mineral makeup that covers the red while still looking very natural.

I have acne and hyperpigmentation. Will your treatments help with both?

Yes, our acne treatments and home care products address both acne and hyperpigmentation at the same time. Generally, the acne will clear up much faster than the hyperpigmentation will but most clients will still see noticeable fading of their pigmentation issues. Once you are clear of acne, you may opt to receive additional treatments to remove any remaining hyperpigmentation.

What if my acne doesn't clear?

If it seems that your regimen is not working for you, it may simply call for strengthening of your home care routine or a stricter diet. In order for the skin to clear, it sometimes needs to be dry. Any tightness, flakiness, peeling or dryness indicates penetration of medication, which is a good thing. Consider that your in-clinic treatment schedule may need to be increased or a home care product may need to be substituted. Since all regimens are individualized, it is important that you schedule an Acne Treatment or Virtual Check-In as soon as you need help.

Scheduling an Appointment

How do I become a client at your acne clinic?

All new clients are required to schedule an Acne Consultation prior to scheduling any acne treatments. Read more about our Clinic Services in our Austin, Texas clinic.

What are your hours?

Our clinic is open “doctor’s hours” Monday – Friday until 5pm.

Cost and Payments

What is the cost of the Acne Consultation and necessary products?

Topical medication prices range from $13 to $65 per item, and a full 2+ month supply of home care products will cost approximately $140. Recommended treatment schedules and home care routines will be explained in your consultation.

How much will it cost for me to get clear?

The Acne Consultation plus the initial full set of products, depending on your Acne Type, will be around $375 and should last you 2+ months. The active medications are purposefully put in smaller containers because they will be strengthened at different points in your treatment plan, and we won’t let any products go to waste.

The First Followup appointment (first treatment and homework review required after the Consultation) is $150. Subsequent treatments range from $80-$150.

It typically takes 2-3 months for highly-compliant adults with inflamed acne to get mostly-to-completely clear, while clients who tend to be less compliant and diligent, or non-inflamed acne, can take 4-6 months. The more compliant you are, the faster you will get clear!

Generally, it costs about $300 in products and $375-$475 in treatments to get clear. You will need to stay on your maintenance home care in order to remain clear. We like to see our clients at least every 12 weeks for maintenance treatments.

Do I have to use your products?

In order to isolate the variables, we require that you only use products from the POREspective® Acne Control line. Acne is challenging enough to get under control without bringing in outside products that may react with or cause problems with a product you need to be on to get clear. It’s in your best interest to use our products. Skin care lines change formulas too often for use to keep track, and we know exactly which ingredients are in our products.

Once your skin has cleared and you are no longer under our care, you are welcome to experiment with outside products. Until then, let’s keep it simple.

Why don't you accept insurance?

POREspective® is an acne treatment clinic and does not accept medical insurance or Medicaid.

However, many of our clients are able to be reimbursed for their expenses if they have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) through their employer. All plans are different and you should discuss this with your FSA administrator to see what their specific qualifications are. We cannot make any promises that your FSA will cover our treatments and products.

What type of payment do you accept?

In the clinic we accept Visa, Master Card, and Discover. A valid credit card and pre-payment or deposit is required to hold the appointment. Any remaining payment is due at the time of service.

Why do I have to give my credit card information?

It is standard business practice to hold the appointment with a valid credit card. We need to know that you are as serious as we are about getting your skin clear.

What if I need to cancel an appointment?
