How many of you are totally psyched the pandemic is coming to an end and it’s time to get out and travel again? Whether you are going on a family beach vacation or traveling overseas, this has been a hard year and we are all overdue for some much-needed travel time. Here are my best skin tips, just in time for all that post-Covid summer fun:
Find a Lighter Formula Sunscreen.
So many sunscreens feel heavy and look white, which can contribute to breakouts and shine during the summer months. I have fallen in love with EltaMD’s new UV Sheer due to it’s feather-light texture and quick absorption, and keep it in stock at POREspective and my new skin care clinic!
For every day use, my holy-grail sunscreen remains the untinted version of EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46. Just keep in mind it’s not waterproof, so if you’re sweating or taking a dip in the pool need a sunscreen labeled “water resistant.”
If you are looking for a daily sunscreen that goes on matte, check out Cetaphil Dermcontrol SPF 30 or Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture With Broad Spectrum SPF 35 from my approved “daily sunscreen” list.
If you’re looking for a waterproof sunscreen that will stay on through an outdoor jog or swim in the pool, check out my most up-to-date list of acne-safe “water-resistant” sunscreens.
If you can’t find something you like, keep trying!
When It’s Time to Reapply…
When you take that mask on and off, you’re sunscreen comes right off with it. Be sure to reapply after masking.
Touch up your makeup with my favorite Mineralogie powder in a a super-convenient dispensing brush, which contains acne-safe loose mineral powder and an SPF built right in.
Apply Sunscreen in the Buff.
Bikinis give no protection for the skin, and sunburns on those missed areas can hurt the most. Before hitting the beach, apply SPF to the whole body naked before putting on that skimpy suit. And if you do get sunburned? I love how quickly EltaMD’s Laser Enzyme Gel takes the heat out of a sunburn. It’s also great for soothing itchy skin from saltwater or chlorine.
Hold off on Using Tazorac, Retin-A or Differin until September.
Vitamin A prescriptions make the skin fragile and susceptible to sunburns, so I recommend holding off on using these prescription products until the fall. All the exfoliation you need in the summer is a creamy physical scrub like my award-winning Daily Scrub. If you really want to use a vitamin A in the summer, I personally use and recommend the skinbetter Clearing Serum at night, and move my application of Clearing Gel (benzoyl peroxide) to the mornings. I even carry samples of the skinbetter Clearing Serum in my new skin care clinic!
Acne Can Occur in Embarrassing Locations.
The solution to back and bum acne? Scrub those areas every morning with Clearing Scrub, a 3-in-1 cleanser, scrub and acne product that contains 2.5% benzoyl peroxide.
If Mosquitoes are Enemy #1:
Did you know that a person’s chemical makeup attracts mosquitoes to certain people and not others? This is why some of us always seem to get bit while others get off scot free. If you don’t like the chemical scent of insect repellant, Repel Plant-Based Lemon Eucalyptus DEET-Free Insect Repellent gives short-term protection from those irritating buggers. My husband says it even works on serious bugs!
