Alissa’s Sizzling Summer Skin Tips!

How many of you are totally psyched it’s finally summer? Whether you are going on a family vacation or just hanging out at home for an extended stay-cation, you’ve worked hard this year and deserve some much-needed rest, relaxation, and unadulterated playtime. Here are my best skin tips, just in time for all that summer fun:

Find a Lighter Formula Sunscreen.

A lot of sunscreen is heavy and oily, which can contribute to breakouts and shine during the summer months. If you can’t find something you like, keep trying!

For every day use, my holy-grail sunscreen is Elta UV Clear SPF 46, but it can feel heavy in the summer if you get oily and it’s NOT waterproof so it will drip right off sweaty skin or in the pool. (Note: The tinted version of EltaMD UV Clear contains pore-clogging isopropyl palmitate, so I only recommend the original untinted version.)

If you are looking for a daily sunscreen that goes on matte, check out Cetaphil Dermcontrol SPF 30 or Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture With Broad Spectrum SPF 35 from my approved “daily sunscreen” list.

If you’re looking for a waterproof sunscreen that will stay on through an outdoor jog or swim in the pool, check out my most up-to-date list of acne-safe “water-resistant” sunscreens.

When It’s Time to Reapply…

To streamline makeup re-application, touch up with my favorite Mineralogie powder in a a super-convenient dispensing brush, which contains acne-safe loose mineral powder and an SPF built right in.

Apply Sunscreen in the Buff.

Bikinis give no protection for the skin, and sunburns on those missed areas can hurt the most. Before hitting the beach, apply SPF to the whole body naked before putting on that skimpy suit.

Skip The Baseball Cap.

A baseball cap won’t protect your face from sun coming at an angle. Instead, opt for a hat with a full brim for better sun protection, just like our gorgeous clear-skinned model client above.

Hold off on Using Tazorac, Retin-A or Differin until September.

Vitamin A derivatives make the skin fragile and susceptible to sunburns and brown spots. Hold off on using these products until the fall. All the exfoliation you need in the summer is a creamy scrub like Daily Scrub and an exfoliating serum.

Acne Can Occur in Embarrassing Locations.

The solution to back and bum acne? Scrub those areas every morning with Clearing Scrub, a 3-in-1 cleanser, scrub and acne product that contains 2.5% benzoyl peroxide.

Reduce Bumps and Irritations Caused by Summer Heat and Humidity.

To reduce bumps and irritations caused by summer heat and humidity, try our Hydrating Gel, which contains calming aloe vera and allantoin. It’s also great for soothing sunburned and itchy skin from saltwater or chlorine–without breaking you out.

If Mosquitoes are Enemy #1:

Did you know that a person’s chemical makeup attracts mosquitoes to certain people and not others? This is why some of us always seem to get bit while others get off scot free. If you don’t like the chemical scent of insect repellant, Repel Plant-Based Lemon Eucalyptus DEET-Free Insect Repellent gives short-term protection from those irritating buggers. For serious bugs, Repel Scented Family 15% DEET Insect Repellant is the only one we’ve found that won’t break you out.

Have a great summer, and don’t forget your sunscreen!

Stay clear!
